THE GROWSURE LENS

Keep four connected decisions visible:

1. Who deserves attention?
2. Why should they care?
3. How will the organisation engage?
4. What is the market teaching the team?

[Explore the approach →](https://grow-sure.com.au/how-growsure-works)

Outbound is often treated as a relatively low risk experiment. Build a list, create a message, ask someone to start reaching out and see what happens. If it works, keep going. If it does not, try something else.

The problem is that poor outbound is not always harmless.

When the targeting, messaging and follow up are poor, the cost goes beyond the resources to make the calls or send the emails. Poor messaging can make prospects less receptive to future conversations and reduce your ability to contact them in the future.

### **Poor outbound wastes more than time**

The obvious cost of outbound is people and effort. Someone needs to research prospects, make contact, follow up and manage responses.

But there is another cost when capable people are asked to execute an unclear process.

Imagine a salesperson or partner is handed 100 companies and told to “see what they can generate”. There is little explanation of why those businesses were selected, limited understanding of the buyers and a generic message designed to work across the entire list.

Response is poor. After several weeks, the salesperson starts questioning the list, then the message and eventually outbound itself.

Leadership may conclude that the person is not doing enough. The salesperson may conclude that outbound does not work.

But what was actually tested?

It may simply have been a weak combination of targeting, messaging and execution.

Good people can compensate for an unclear process for a while. Eventually, even capable people lose confidence in activity that repeatedly produces little evidence of progress.

### **Poor outbound can make future conversations harder**

Every outbound interaction creates an impression.

From inside the business, an email may feel like one small part of a campaign. To the recipient, it may be their first meaningful experience of your organisation.

Consider a CFO who receives a generic message asking for 15 minutes to discuss how your company can help improve performance. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, but there is very little reason to respond.

A few weeks later another message arrives, followed by an automated follow up.

The CFO may not actively dislike your company. They may simply decide that what you send is unlikely to be relevant.

Months later, someone in your organisation may have a genuinely valuable reason to make contact. The market still exists, but that conversation may now be harder to start because an impression has already been formed.

Businesses often measure how many people they contacted. They rarely consider whether those interactions made the next conversation easier or harder.

### **Poor outbound can teach the wrong lesson**

This may be the biggest risk.

Imagine a business wants to enter a new market. It builds a list of 1,000 companies, runs an outbound campaign for six weeks and receives very little response.

The conclusion quickly becomes: **“That market isn't interested.”**

But is that what the campaign proved?

Perhaps the wrong people were contacted. Perhaps the message focused too heavily on the company rather than the buyer. Perhaps the timing was wrong, the market segment was too broad or the chosen channel was not appropriate.

The business may believe it has learned that the market does not work, when all it has really learned is that one particular combination of targeting, messaging, timing and execution did not create enough engagement.

Those are very different conclusions.

One causes the business to walk away. The other creates better questions.

That is why outbound should not simply generate activity. It should create opportunities, useful knowledge, or ideally both.

### **Before you “try outbound”**

Before giving someone another list and asking them to see what happens, consider whether the foundations are actually in place.

- Do you know who deserves attention?
- Do you understand why those buyers should care?
- Is the message relevant to their world?
- And if they do not respond, will you know enough to understand why?

Poor outbound can cost considerably more than the campaign itself.

The next question is how to build an outbound process that helps the business get smarter with every interaction.
